TAXI LICENSE
N.Y.C.
A taxi license is much more than a
license to drive a taxicab in New York City. Referred to as a HACK
License, it soon becomes a key to a world many can only dream of.
Once licensed by the N.Y.C. T.L.C.
(New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission) a taxi driver will have
access to all of New York City’s famous and “infamous” Yellow Taxi
Cabs. He or she can work any hours of the day. Vacations can be a
simple as just not showing up to work and job security is based on
your driving record.
YES THE
HOURS ARE LONG….But
Driving a taxi is an excellent way
to make a living. Recent adjustments to the fare structure by the
N.Y.C. Taxi & Limousine Commission have increased taxi driver income
to the highest level in decades.
TOURISTS A
PLENTY
With the dollar at a low level
against many other currencies New York City Hotels are packed to the
rafters with tourists. Add this to the convention trade, the theater
district and the newly expanding upper income neighborhoods outside
Manhattan, we see a formula for much higher income for persons
holding a valid taxi license in the City.
HOW TO GET A TAXI LICENSE IN NYC
The first step to getting a taxi
license in New York City is attending a six hour
defensive driving
course. This can be done at The Master Cabbie Taxi Academy, the
largest of New York’s Taxi Schools/Academies/Institutes. Prior to
filing the application with the NYC TLC a taxi diver applicant must
also have a medical exam.
With paperwork complete and filing
fees in hand one then files the application with the licensing
division of the N.Y.C. T.L.C. At the time of filing fingerprints will
be taken. A criminal history will pose a problem if violations were
recent, numerous or violent. If you have a criminal record you should
consult with an attorney that is familiar with the licensing standards
of the N.Y.C. T.L.C. before spending your time and money in the
licensing process.
Once the application is submitted to
the T.L.C. a taxi license applicant must submit to a drug test. The
fee is currently $25.50 payable only by money order to a T.L.C.
designated laboratory.
The next step in the taxi licensing
process is to attend taxi school. Following taxi school an applicant
must successfully complete the New York City Taxi Operators
Examination.
The Taxi Test consists of thirty
questions related to English proficiency and fifty questions related
to New York City taxi cab knowledge.
